Saturday’s massive ‘Refugees Welcome Here’ Demo saw over 100,000 participate in London and many events take place across the country. Similar events across Europe took place to say Refugees welcome here. This was one of the biggest demonstrations for refugees in Britain’s recent history.
The humanitarian disaster facing refugees continues and our Government’s meagre offer of 20,000 refugees over four years, many of whom could be potentially face deportation at 18, is woefully inadequate. This week, 34 refugees, including 15 children and babies, drowned when a boat capsized on the journey from Turkey to Greece.
The EU meeting attended by Theresa May, far from adopting s more humanitarian approach to the crisis, has resulted in measures strengthening “Fortress Europe” such as detaining refugees in camps in Italy and Greece, setting up camps in Africa and the Middle East and Hungary closing the border with Serbia. There was no agreement on quotas for European countries to address the large migration of refugees to the EU and a further meeting us scheduled next month. Therefore it is vital that we keep up the pressure through campaigning.
