Labour leadership election information for unison members

I’ve actually had a few queries today from members asking about whether they can participate in the Labour leadership election. Remarkably, UNISON HQ has already circulated some guidance, though it’s not entirely complete. The link below includes “Frequently Asked Questions” (and answers):

Here is a link online: https://camdenunison.org.uk/2016/07/13/unison-and-the-labour-leadership-contest/

The key issue seems to be whether UNISON members, who are not full members of the Labour Party (or only joined after 12 January this year) will be eligible to vote without paying the outrageous £25 fee for the ‘privilege’. The short answer is that those UNISON members who are paying into the Affiliated Political Fund (Labour Link) will be eligible to vote, BUT should register as a ‘Labour affiliated supporter’ by MONDAY 08 August.

For those UNISON members who became affiliated supporters in the midst of last year’s leadership election, it’s not yet clear whether that previous status still entitles them to vote this year.

Voting closes on WEDNESDAY 21 September, with the result being announced just prior to the start of Labour’s annual conference in Liverpool on 24 September.

Please do pass this information on to Unison members
